Il Marselan è uno di quei cepaggi nati in laboratorio che hanno poi guadagnato una personalità propria così forte da far quasi dimenticare le sue origini ibride. Creato nel 1961 all’Inra di Marseillan (da cui il nome) come incrocio tra Grenache Noir e Cabernet Sauvignon, fu pensato per unire la resistenza e la generosità del Grenache alla struttura tannica e agli aromi del Cabernet. Per decenni rimase una curiosità tecnica, ma negli ultimi vent’anni il Languedoc lo ha adottato con entusiasmo, scoprendo che su certi terroir argillo-calcari riesce a produrre qualcosa di davvero convincente: piccole bacche concentrate, bassa resa, profilo aromatico ricco. La cuvée “Pure Velvet” di Sieur d’Arques è costruita interamente su Marselan in purezza, e il nome non è una promessa vuota. Il 2021 è un’annata che nel Languedoc ha offerto freschezza e equilibrio in misura maggiore rispetto alle estati torride degli anni precedenti, e questo si sente nella struttura finale del vino: tannini presenti ma morbidi e rotondi, acidità buona, frutto ben definito. Nel bicchiere si presenta con una bella veste rubino. Al naso è complesso e gourmand: ciliegia, mora, mirtillo, prugna — un profilo di frutta rossa e nera che si alterna con grazia. In bocca la texture è esattamente quella promessa dal nome: vellutata, priva di spigoli, con tannini fonduti che lasciano un finale fruttato, leggermente speziato, di buona lunghezza. La componente minerale dei suoli argillo-calcari emerge in sottofondo, a completare il quadro. A tavola è il rosso perfetto per le carni rosse alla griglia: un pavé di boeuf alle erbe aromatiche, un’entrecôte con salsa al pepe verde, delle côtelettes d’agneau scottate. Funziona benissimo anche su formaggi stagionati di media intensità. Temperatura: 16-17°C. Created in 1961 at the Inra of Marseillan (from which the name) as a cross between Grenache Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, it was designed to unite the resilience and generosity of Grenache with the tannic structure and aromas of Cabernet. For decades it remained a technical curiosity, but over the last twenty years the Languedoc has adopted it enthusiastically, discovering that on certain clay-limestone terroirs it can produce something truly convincing: small concentrated berries, low yield, rich aromatic profile. The Sieur d’Arques “Pure Velvet” cuvée is built entirely on pure Marselan, and the name is not an empty promise. The 2021 vintage in the Languedoc offered freshness and balance in greater measure than the torrid summers of recent years, and this is felt in the wine’s final structure: tannins present but soft and round, good acidity, well-defined fruit. In the glass it presents a beautiful ruby colour. On the nose it is complex and gourmand: cherry, blackberry, blueberry, plum — a profile of red and dark fruit that alternates gracefully. On the palate the texture is exactly what the name promises: velvety, free of rough edges, with integrated tannins that leave a fruity, lightly spiced finish of good length. The mineral component of the clay-limestone soils emerges in the background, completing the picture. At the table it is the perfect red for grilled red meats: a herb-crusted pavé de boeuf, an entrecôte with green pepper sauce, seared lamb cutlets. It also works very well alongside medium-intensity aged cheeses. Temperature: 16–17°C.
